Gregorian College, Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State was at about 9.10 pm yesterday gutted by fire which affected the top floor of a three storey building serving as hostel for the female students of the institution.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police Command, SP Haruna Mohammed who confirmed the fire incident in Awka on Monday said that following the report of the fire incident, Police patrol teams and other security agencies rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area to prevent hoodlums from taking advantage to loot while fire fighters were also contacted to put off the fire.
Mohammed noted that other emergency responders and local volunteers who were equally on ground evacuated the students from the building to safety even as he said that no casualty was recorded and that the cause of the fire was suspected to be as a result of electric power surge.
He however stated that the fire which affected top floor of the three storey building was put off at about 0:45am of today adding that all the students (girls) of the hostel had been relocated to another hostel and that the case was under investigation to ascertain actual cause of the incident.
He further said, “Consequently, the Commissioner of Police, CP John B.Abang,fdc enjoins residents of the state to always switch off all electronic appliances in their homes, schools and various offices when not in use to avoid electric power surge.
“It would be recalled that between 16/10/2019 and date, the command has recorded over thirty cases of fire incidents officially reported.
“The resultant effects of the above cases of fire incidents include loss of lives, injuries to persons and destruction of buildings and numerous properties worth billions of Naira, thereby subjecting the victims to untold hardships.“
