…As Police announce readiness to enforce the suspension order

The Anambra State Government on Sunday announced the suspension of the 2020 edition of the Egwu Imo Awka cultural festival scheduled to commence soon in the state capital.

Announcing the suspension, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu said that the cultural event was suspended by the state government taking cognizance of the prevailing federal government curfew order, state government order on public gatherings, World Health Organisation (WHO) and Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) guidelines on preventing the spread of the Coronavirus also known as Covid-19.

Chukwulobelu added that the suspension also extends to other cultural festivals in Anambra state.

He further said, “The public, traditional rulers, Presidents General, custodians and organisers of such festivals are hereby put on notice that they will be held responsible should the festivals go ahead.

“Members of the public are hereby advised not to attend such festivals and to stay at home or go about their business observing Covid-19 guidelines previously issued by the federal and state governments.”

The SSG therefore directed the security agencies to strictly enforce the suspension order.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police command has said that it was determined to enforce the order suspending the 2020 Egwu Imo Awka Cultural festival and other festivals in the state to the letter and would therefore not hesitate to arrest and prosecute any individual or group of persons found violating the government order which was made in the overall interest of the citizens and other residents alike.

The command in a statement signed by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Haruna Mohammed in Awka on Sunday solicited the corporation and understanding of the public by adhering strictly to the government directives in order to enhance public safety and security which the citizens continued to enjoy in the state.
