The Anambra State Police Command has said that it has recorded 20 cases of rape in the state from January 2020 to date.
The Commissioner of Police in the State, CP John Abang stated this when he received members of the United Traders Association, Anambra State chapter who paid him a visit at the State Command Headquarters, Awka as part of the activities to mark a one day campaign against rape in the state.
Abang noted that out of the 20 rape cases, 15 were charged to Court and still on trial, 21 suspects were arrested while 5 cases were under investigation.
The Commissioner of Police who welcomed the group to the state command headquarters assured them of his maximum support towards realizing their goal of making Anambra a rape free state.
He further stated that the command under his watch would continue to partner with the association and other stakeholders in order to enhance safety and security in the State.
Earlier in her speech, the President of the association, Mrs. Nkiru Duru who led the delegation to the State Command headquarters during a peaceful rally against rape and other sexual violence, said that the rally was aimed at expressing their concern over increasing cases of rape and killings of young girls/women across the Country.
Duru also stated that the victims’ families, friends and indeed the entire society suffer permanent social and psychological trauma thereby harming the entire social system.
She also advocated for death penalty for rapists.
