President Maada Bio of Sierra Leone and former Malawian President, Joyce Banda are to lead other international dignitaries to unveil the African Leadership Forum on Decent Work and a book titled “Deadly or Decent Work” in Freetown on Friday, May 28 under the chairmanship of the nation’s Minister of Labour and Social Security, Alpha Timbo.
The book was authored by a renowned member of the African Union Labour-Migration Advisory Committee from Ghana, Rev. Dr. Asie Kabukie Ocansey.
This is as the Journalists International Forum For Migration (JIFORM) and the Nekotech Center for Excellence, both organizers of the African Migration Summit (AMS), list personalities contributing to regular migration for honour.
On February 25-26, 2021 in Accra, Ghana, the maiden edition of the AMS was held during which several programmes were outlined to further promote decent, safe, orderly and regular migration on the continent and beyond.
Those penciled for the African decent work awards included President Bio; ex-President Joyce Banda; Sierra Leone’s Minister of Labour and Social Security, Alpha Timbo, Nigeria’s Minister of State Labour and Employment, Chief Festus Keyamo, SAN and Dr. Ocansey.
A statement issued by Ajibola Abayomi, the President of JIFORM said the personalities were considered based on their commitments to the promotion of decent work and advocacy against slavery of migrants both within and outside the continent.
Calling on African leaders to initiate an Affirmative Action to open up multi-lateral platforms especially with the Middle East to negotiate decent jobs for the Africans, Ajibola expressed the readiness of the AMS to draw attention to the need to secure jobs for women through decent means devoid of abuse and intimidation across the globe especially in Arabian nations.
He lauded President Bio for lifting the ban on labour migration and engaging Ocansey, a multiple international award winner and labour migration consultant with over 30 years experience to coordinate the recruitment of Sierra Leoneans for decent jobs abroad being supported with the expertise of several professionals under the umbrella of the Slide of Success (SOS) Global Investments.
“Sierra Leone is showing other African countries the way to go by being honest and humble. Africa must not shy away from the fact that her youths are yearning for opportunities because the systems in countries here cannot provide enough to accommodate many of them. However, machinery must be put in place to ensure that they are not deceived into slavery, exploitation and prostitution.
“We are applauding the SOS’s option noted for excellent recruitment and guaranteed workers’ welfare through the magnanimity of President Bio. This is a huge relief and the right way to go”, said the JIFORM President.
The AMS according to the statement would present African Migration Presidential Champion 2021, African stateswoman Decent Work Champion, Distinguished Ministerial Service, African Decent Work Crusader and the Legendary Decent Work Service awards to President Bio, Banda, Timbo, Keyamo and the Amazon’s best seller author, Ocansey respectively for their numerous contributions to positive migration.
