…Harps on compliance to trade rules

The National Coordinator of the 100% Compliance Team of National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Tanko has totally frown at a recent press release issued in Lagos by the Managing Director of Wealthy Honey Investment Limited, Dr. Kayode Farinto in which he asked that the Finance Minister be sacked.

Speaking to some journalist in Apapa, Lagos, Nigeria, Tanko who reaffirmed the vision of 100% Compliance Team said, “I disagreed with the opinion of Dr. Farinto, l personally have been campaigning against non-compliance since the past one year three months to my fellow agents and shippers and bonded terminals to do the right thing.”

Tanko while still expressing his bitterness over the statements by Farinto, alleges that some of clearing agents normally under declare their goods and if Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) is to do their jobs properly a lot of containers wouldn’t exit the ports.

Adding that genuine declaration wouldn’t warrant Demand Notice (DN) to start with, he asked, “If you do the right thing, do you think anybody will just come and raise a DN for you?”

“If there is a DN raised on a particular consignment and you don’t understand and you are very sure of your declaration, then you write a protest letter to the Custom Area Controller of that command (CAC). The CAC will tell them to go and re-examine the cargo”, he further adds.

According to Tanko, “l watched an interview of Dr. Farinto where he asked the federal government to sack or remove Minister of Finance and the current management of NCS. In my own opinion, l don’t see any reason for that rather dialogue will solve the problem.”

Emphasizing that in federal government agencies, there are due processes of documented evidence before any head of government agencies can be sacked; Tanko debunked the allegation that there are official 25 tables for processing documents for clearing one by 20ft containers rather only 3 official tables.

“However, I am appealing to federal government and the Nigerian Customs Service to beam their searchlight on the activities of some of these bonded terminals and withdraw licenses of those ones not qualified so they can upgrade their equipment.
