The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria, MWUN has threatened to withdraw the services of its members in the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, Dock labour, Shipping and Freight forwarding agencies and Seamen from all ports, jetties, terminals and Oil and Gas platforms nationwide should the management of the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria, CRFFN continues to withhold the nine months of salaries owed its members on its (CRFFN) employ.

The Union in a statement signed by Oniha Erazua on behalf of its Secretary General in Lagos on Thursday said that MWUN as a responsible Union had gone through and exhausted all the processes of reaching an amicable resolution of the matter including issuing various ultimatum(s) which were rudely ignored by the Acting Registrar of CRFFN.

It also accused the Acting Registrar of disregarding resolutions reached at several mediatory meetings, last of which was the one held in Abuja on Wednesday 18th September, 2024 and a host of other infractions of the rights of its members to payment of their wages.

The statement further stated that the Union was more dismayed that the management of CRFFN in nonchalant disregard to one of the resolutions of their meetings which stated that going forward, payment of staff salaries should be the first line of charge, that available funds should be used for this purpose and that there should be no diversion of available funds into any other expense where staff salaries were yet to be paid, still went ahead to organize a “kangaroo training” for some select staff leaving behind a humongous cache of unpaid salaries.

“It is therefore, worrisome to us as a union that despite extending a hand of fellowship and showing willingness to engage and collaborate with management of CRFFN led by the Ag. Registrar, the CRFFN still conduct its affairs in ways inimical to the well being and welfare of our members while trampling on the rights of our members to the gainful enjoyment of their earned salaries.

“Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN can no longer stand idly by and watch the impunity being put on show by CRFFN. MWUN use this medium to put the general public on notice that should the management of CRFFN continue to with hold the nine months of salaries owed our members who are their employees, we will have no other alternatives than to totally withdraw the services of our members in the Nigerian Ports Authority, Dock labour, Shipping and Freight forwarding agencies and Seamen from all ports, jetties, terminals and Oil and Gas platforms nationwide. All authorities to please take note”, the statement declared.
