The wife of the Governor of Anambra State has dedicated the honour bestowed on her as the Duchess of the Catholic Laity of Nigeria to the less privileged members of the society‎.

Mrs. Obiano stated this after the conferment of the honour on her and on her husband, Chief Willie Obiano respectively on the occasion of the fortieth Anniversary of the Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria (CLCN), Onitsha Archdiocese on Saturday at the Shanahan Hall Onitsha.

Mrs. Obiano expressed gratitude to God and the Laity for the recognition but stressed that she was not expecting any recognition because she was merely doing what she considered to be a corporal work of mercy.

According to Mrs. Obiano, “when I am doing what I do, I don’t expect to be rewarded because it is my normal corporal work of mercy. When am assisting in church projects or helping the less privileged and indigent widows, I do it because I believe it is my duty to my God to lend a helping hand to others in need because we are the same humanity.”

The wife of the Governor however said that the award would spur her to do more like she had done over the years alongside her husband, wherever they find themselves, weather at home in Aguleri, Lagos or the United States of America.

She congratulated the Laity Council of Nigeria Onitsha Archdiocese for their forty years anniversary and the great work they were doing in the church.

Earlier the Archbishop of Onitsha Archdiocese, His Grace Most Rev. Valerian Okeke who presided over the Holy Mass to commemorate the occasion, announced the honours of Duke and Duchess ‎to Governor Obiano and his wife Ebelechukwu in recognition of their service to the church and Laity in many Parishes where they reside particularly in Lagos.

The Archbishop explained that the recognition of the Obianos was not because the husband was a Governor but because they have served the church and Laity faithfully and urged the congregation to emulate their dedication.
