Speaking in a welcome address to mark the occasion, the President of the Centre, Prince Engr. Adebambo Ademiluyi said that the search for prospective members of the centre was the initial problem encountered by the founding members of the Centre as they discovered after scrutiny that indeed, integrity which was the hallmark of marine survey practice was not too common in some of the prospective members suggested to them.
Prince Ademiluyi however stated that the centre was therefore very glad that it could parade a group of corporate entities that had been screened and found to be doing business according to international best practices who had proposed their staff for membership of the centre.
He expressed the hope that the corporate and individual members that were being inducted would introduce the centre to other companies who are worthy like them of membership so as to swell the ranks of the centre.
According to him,” The Centre will proceed from now to organize series of activities which will be geared towards development of the centre and her members. In November this year, we intend to have our AGM and the first in the series of our public lectures and it is hoped that this will be delivered by the President of one of our foreign affiliate organizations.
“Before this event, it is intended that we run several training courses in conjunction with other professional bodies in the country for our own members. Also, in order to introduce ourselves to the marine and other sectors that use marine services, we intend to organize series of seminars and workshops that will enlighten on services that our members offer.
“From our constitution, it is clear that Marine Survey practice is very wide. This makes it imperative that we provide information to the regulating bodies about our membership, in order to facilitate the process of registration such of such services for practice in our country. Such regulating agencies include NIMASA, Shippers’ Council, DPR, SON and NCDMB. We also will provide them information on our membership in order to increase patronage on our services rather than the use of quacks and even foreign practitioners to the detriment of qualified Nigerian professionals”.
While expressing the hope that the stakeholders would help the centre to achieve its aims and support its carefully planned expansion programme, Ademiluyi who is also the Chairman Board of Trustees of the Centre further enumerated the objectives of the centre to include; to have an organization that could act as a rallying point for marine surveyors in the country for the purpose of advocacy and self regulation, to curb so many unqualified people (quacks) who parade themselves as Marine Surveyors in various field as well as to provide Marine Certification for several qualified Engineers, Chemists, Mariners, Naval Architects and other professionals who are practicing in the field.
He continued,” To provide a platform for training on the job for all cadres of professionals that are practicing in the field, to affiliate with international organizations in Marine Survey practice for the transfer of knowledge and skills and to eventually have recognition with government for the formation of a Nigerian Institution of Marine Surveyors which would be backed by an Act of parliament”.
Highlight of the event was the inauguration of the Board of Trustees of the Centre and the Induction of new members into the centre.
