… Hosts 4th Nigeria Stroke Assembly

As a way of marking the World Stroke Day coming up on Thursday, October 29, 2015, Stroke Action Nigeria in collaboration with the Nigeria Stroke Reference Group (NSRG) and the Federal Ministry of Health will be hosting the fourth Nigeria Stroke Assembly at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

This year’s Stroke Assembly, riding on the back of the World’s Stroke Day theme of “I am Woman, Stroke Affects Me,” will provide working platforms for partners in the care and prevention of stroke, stroke specific organizations, medical and nursing councils, professions allied to medicine, agencies and individuals with interest in stroke care, stroke survivors, carers and the government to discuss the issues that surround prevention and management of stroke in Nigeria.

Rita Melifonwu, Founder and Chief Executive of Stroke Action Nigeria, said that in support of the World Stroke Campaign theme, her organization and its Stroke Ambassadors would be promoting the strap line “I am Stroke, Know Me”.

In her words, “Stroke Action Nigeria and its Stroke Ambassadors will be promoting the strap line “I am Stroke, Know Me” to emphasize the urgency for all Nigerians to know what stroke is, its causes, risk factors and how to act fast when a stroke happens. This is because stroke is a medical emergency and we need to act fast when stroke happens by taking the person who has suffered stroke straight to the hospital, not the church, herbalist or native doctor”.

She further disclosed that reports from the World Stroke Organization stated that women had a higher lifetime risk of stroke than men and also account for the majority of stroke death.

Speaking on the forthcoming forum, the Chairman of Nigeria Stroke Reference Group, Professor Sunday Bwala, the Chief Consultant Neurologist at the National Hospital Abuja informed that “Stroke kills more people each year than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria put together world over”.

According to him, “At the National Hospital Abuja alone, three to four stroke admissions are recorded per day”, adding that information would be shared on current stroke research and good practice at the forthcoming forum.

“There will also be an Inaugural Gala and Fundraising where key dignitaries, concerned stakeholders, individuals, stroke survivors and businesses supporting stroke care would be in attendance to raise funds to develop ‘The Life after Stroke Centre Projects”, he said.
