The Seme Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has once again demonstrated her relentless efforts in combating smuggling activities as the yuletide period approaches.

This according to the command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Taupyen Selechang was evident as the operational searchlights of the enforcement unit in the command that was stretched to all areas including the creeks that are not accessible to vehicular patrol in Owode axis and the entire approved checkpoints manned by officers and men of the command resulted to a seizure of nine hundred (900) bags of 50kg rice with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of eight million, seven hundred and seventy-five thousand naira (N8, 775,000.00).

Selechang who disclosed this in a press release he issued in Lagos on Friday also said that a number of imported fairly used vehicles were detained pending the production of relevant documents as evidence of duty payment.

He recalled that Seme Area Command had made a giant stride in revenue collection in recent times, exceeding the monthly target of one billion, twenty-one million, seven hundred and ninety thousand, six hundred and sixty-seven naira, thirty-three kobo (N1,021,790,667.33) for the month of November with 25% excess collection.

According to him, the officers of the Command that was adjudged to be the busiest international land border were always at alert to checkmate and break all barriers to legitimate trade across the European Union sponsored Lagos Abidjan corridor.

“As a command, while we wish all and sundry compliments of the season, we also advocate the co-operation of our critical stake holders, opinion leaders, both the print and electronic media, our immediate host community in enlightening the youth and other border miscreants the need for peace and not to be involved in smuggling and other illegal activities during the yuletide period”, he said.
