The Nigerian Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association has indicated its readiness to work with the new Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside in making sure that his administration succeeds.

The National President of the association, Engr. Matthew Alalade made this known in a press statement he issued in Lagos yesterday.

While welcoming the Director-General, Alalade advised the NIMASA DG to appoint technocrats who would help make his administration a success even as he appealed for re-establishment of the the national carrier to gainfully engage his members.

He further advised Peterside and the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi to shelve their personal interests and work for the interest of the maritime sector especially for the Nigeria Seafarers who he said have suffered unemployment and slave labour wages and the Nigeria economy in general.

According to him,” We welcome the Director General of NIMASA onboard and urge him to appoint technocrats to beef up his administration. Also our Association appeal for national carriers (Ships) so as to employ our members. We are ready to work with the new Director General in making sure his administration is successful.

“We seriously advise both the Honourable Minister of Transport and the Director General of NIMASA, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi and Dr. Dakuku Peterside Adol, respectively to shelve personal interest and work together for the interest of the maritime sector most especially the Nigeria Seafarers who have suffered unemployment and slave labour wages and the Nigeria economy in general.

“It is our humble advice that the new Director General of NIMASA focuses on capacity building and to making sure that the Cabotage regime work to the letter according to the Act establishing it. The Association as the umbrella body for the senior Seafarers in Nigeria looks forward to having a robust relationship with the Director General to alleviate the suffering of our members from the anguish of sea robbery, kidnapping piracy, unemployment and slavery welfare condition of service”.

He therefore congratulated the Minister of Transportation as well as the new director-General of NIMASA on their well deserved appointments on behalf of the National Executive Officers and the entire members of the association.
