The Customs Area Controller of the Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Comptroller Yusuf Umar has said that the Western Marine Command had contributed immensely to the successes recorded by the Operation Hawk Descend of the Nigeria Customs Service.

Comptroller Umar who made this known shortly after receiving an award of excellence from the management of the Primetime Reporters in Lagos recalled that he was part of the team that midwived the coming into existence of the operation which was aimed at clamping down on the importers of the foreign poultry products in Nigeria.

He also disclosed that he was the first Comptroller from the Zone A of the Nigeria Customs Service to be so recognized by the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) through a letter from the body to him commending him for his commitment and that of his officers against importers of foreign poultry products.

According to him,” And this award will definitely propel me to do more, particularly the content of your wordings on this plaque, for you to have captured Operation Hawk Descend which I am the architect. A team of four or five of us Comptrollers at the Customs Headquarter, we sat down, we deliberated, we brought out this name and the CGC confirmed it before we fixed a date, 7th July at Seme and we went for the launching.

“I will say that I am the first Comptroller in this area to be so honoured by the Poultry Association of Nigeria, I have the letter that has been sent to me commending me for my commitment to duty and that of my officers.

“This award is not for me alone, it is for the Western Marine Officers and for the Nigeria Customs Service because when you talk of Operation Hawk Descend, it is all encompassing, we all net there and we have made a pledge, we took them up and we are going all out to make sure that we have zero tolerance as far as the importation of foreign poultry products is concerned and I am happy my command has garnered well over 9,000 cartons of foreign poultry products since the launching of this Operation Hawk Descend and you are right when you said either I am the first or the second, you may be right, I don’t know whether I am the first or the second but all I know, I have made my mark or we have made our marks. It is a team work and as a command”.

While commending the management of the medium for the recognition done him, he expressed the hope that his association with Primetime Reporters Newspapers would continue to grow and blossom into something bigger that what was seen presently.

Earlier in his opening speech, the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, Primetime Reporters Newspapers, Mr. Saint Augustine Nwadinamuo praised the commitment of the Comptroller in transforming the Western Marine Command Headquarters into a more habitable edifice for the men and officers of the command noting that the Headquarters which used to be waterlogged at every little rainfall was now a safe haven for officers to work in.

Nwadinamuo recalled that the award presented to the Comptroller which was in recognition of contributions towards curbing the excesses of the smugglers of imported frozen poultry products and other goods through the Nigerian waters, the contribution of his command to the Operation Hawk Descend of the Nigeria customs Service and for transforming the physical structure of the Command’s Headquarters was in commemoration of the 1st year anniversary of the news medium.

He however urged the Comptroller not to be deterred in his efforts at defending the economy of this nation by his commitment to duty but gear up for more challenges as the reward for hard work is more work adding that no good work would ever go unrewarded.
