The Federal Inland Reveue Service (FIRS), Micro and Small Tax Office located at No. 22 Warehouse Road, Apapa may possibly be shut down over its indebtedness to the tune of Seven Hundred and Twenty Thousand Naira (N720, 000) to the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

The said amount, it was gathered was the backlog of unpaid monthly sanitation fee to LAWMA for having evacuated wastes generated by FIRS over the months which had accumulated over time.

A visit to the agency’s office at Apapa Thursday by our correspondent revealed that a sealing notice had been issued to FIRS office by LAWMA thereby giving the occupants of the building a 48 hour ultimatum to pay the outstanding debt or risk withdrawal of service and subsequent recovery of the debt through the use of all available legal means.

The notice which was sighted by our correspondent read,” Lagos Waste Management Authority appreciates the existing mutual relationship between both partners. LAWMA has diligently and effectively provided the required services to your organization regularly on monthly basis in the area of waste evacuation. The cost of operation is borne LAWMA and it is crucial that payment must be settled.

“However, your company has been indebted to this organization to the tune of N720, 000. Therefore, this is a final warning that I the next 48 hours, our services shall be withdrawn and we shall use all available legal means to ensure that all the outstanding debts is recovered.

It will be recalled that LAWMA is an agency of the Lagos State Government while FIRS is an agency of the Federal Government. One therefore wonders why a Federal Government’s institution saddled with the responsibility of ensuring that corporate organizations live up to their tax obligation to the Federal Government defaults in doing same to the agency of a State Government even as it leaves more to be desired.

However, all attempts made to get the reaction of the FIRS proved abortive as the Controller was said to be away while the officers met declined comments as they had no permission to talk on the issue.
