Reasons have emerged Thursday in Lagos as to why the ultra-modern truck transit terminal which has been ongoing for the past five years has remained uncompleted despite several promises by the Federal Government to deliver on the project.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr. Godwin Ekeh who advanced the reasons in Lagos while addressing stakeholders on plans to divert vehicular movement while reconstruction of the Wharf road at Apapa said that failure to capture the shoreline protection in the initial design of the project was responsible for the delay.
Ekeh however assured that the shoreline protection had been included in the design and that as soon as that was done and the shoreline protected, the terminal would be opened for use by truckers.
In his words,” But let me tell you something about that truck park terminal, when that place was designed, the designers omitted the shoreline protection which has now been included and as soon as that is done and the shoreline is protected, the place will be opened”.
Earlier in his submission at the meeting, the Technical Director of Flour Mills who simply identified himself as Mr. Festus suggested that the Federal Ministry of Works should consider partnering the private sector for the completion of the project adding that the project if completed would take about three hundred and sixty trucks of the road.
He also pointed out that allowing the trucks on the road would amount to them taking half kilometer of the road even as he said that from his findings, it only remained about ten kilometers for the bridge to be connected and could be done in month.
“I went round like Comrade Opeifa did on Monday to see things for myself especially at Tincan axis. My suggestion is basically on the holding bay at Tincan. I inspected this facility and I believe that the project is almost completed. I am suggesting if the Ministry could partner with the private sponsorship to the complete and this could be done under a month because it only remains ten kilometers to the bridge and floor marking and cleaning and this will accommodate about three hundred and sixty trucks. If these transit trucks are allowed to stay on the road, they will occupy about half kilometer of the road regardless of the diversion which is very good but I think it is a good thing for us to complete that holding bay on time so that we can have free flow of traffic in Apapa”, he said.
