AIG Maritime directs immediate release of containers detained at terminals by Police

The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Maritime Police Command, AIG Abdul Dahiru Danwawu has directed the immediate release of all containers put on hold in all terminals and shipping companies by the Police to the consignees/agents of such containers with immediate effect.

The AIG in a letter addressed to the Customs Area Controller, Tincan Island Port command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Comptroller Musa Baba Abdullahi, calling the attention of the Releasing officer of the command, dated 2nd April, 2019 and signed by the O/C Investigation, Ishaku Agwom, informed that in the event of any further directives from the Force, the CAC would be notified accordingly in writing.

He however pointed out that the following containers; MSKU – 2620080, PONU – 0082513, TEMU – 2557894, MRKU – 9951827, MSKU – 5100950, TCLU – 2007105, MRKU – 9358302, MSKU – 5836750, PONU – 0040420 and PONU – 0954025 lying at Maersk Line Nigeria Limited, Tincan, Apapa, Lagos were subject of litigation at the Federal High Court, Lagos and must not be released until and order of such from a competent court of law is given to that effect.

The letter with the heading, ‘RE: Need to Collectively Streamline The Plethora of Letters of Authority to Detain/Release Containers From Security Formations to Ensure Acountability and Sanitize the Maritime’, reads,”I refer to my letter with reference no: CR3000/MT/FHQ/ ANNEX/ LA/VOL.1/160 dated September, 2016 on the above subject matter and wish to make the following remarks.

  1. The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Maritime, AIG Abdul Dahiru Danwawu directed that you release without delay, all containers put on hold in your terminal/shipping company with immediate effect to the consignee/agent of such containers.
  2. In the event of any further directive, you will be notified accordingly in writing.
  3. The following containers were lying at Maersk Line Nig. Ltd, Tincan, Apapa, Lagos are subject of litigation at the Federal High Court, Lagos and must not be released until an order of such from a competent court of law is given to that effect
