Three die, two missing in fresh Lagos boat mishap

…As agencies rescued 13 persons                                   

Three persons have reportedly died while two others have been declared missing following a head on collision involving two passenger boats along the creek in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State on Tuesday.

According to a statement by the General Manager, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Mr. Damilola Emmanuel in Lagos on Tuesday, one of the boats was conveying ten (10) (8) passengers from the Ojo jetty while the other was conveying eight passengers from Irewe community when the incident occurred.

Emmanuel disclosed that eighteen (18) passengers in total were involved with thirteen (13) rescued alive, three (3) fatalities and two (2), an adult and a child still missing as at press time.

He said,” Search and rescue operation is ongoing by relevant state agencies and the local community who were the first responders.

“Preliminary investigations by the Authority revealed that the incident was caused by reckless driving on the part of boat captains as one of them wasn’t in his right of way.

“Further investigations would be thoroughly carried out by the Authority and those found wanting will be sanctioned according.”
