For allegedly abandoning them in the last four years, the people of Akwukwu community in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State has disowned the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial Zone in the red chamber and People’s Democratic Party Senatorial Candidate for Anambra Central, Senator Uche Ekwunife as their preferred candidate for the 2023 National Assembly election.

Also, the community has adopted the Labour Party Candidate, Senator Victor Umeh as their preferred candidate for the 2023 National Assembly election coming up on February 25, 2023.

In a statement signed by the leadership of the community and made available to our correspondent, the community maintained that Senator Uche Ekwunife had been in the Senate for four years now without any constituency project to show for the people of Akwukwu.

“Every election year, she remembers Akwukwu and she will come and carry us blind. No Constituency project, nothing to show for the town. Akwukwu has a road that span through Oba to Akwukwu which Uche Ekwunife promised to see to its construction once she gets to the Senate, we voted for her, she won and ran away. Now, another election year has come again and she has returned with her empty promise.

“We need to get it right this time around. Uche Ekwunife will not get votes from Akwukwu, whoever is collecting money from her with a promise to deliver Akwukwu votes to her is deceiving her. Akwukwu has held a meeting and concluded that they will not vote for Uche Ekwunife until she fulfills her promise of seeing to the construction of the road from Oba to Akwukwu and provides other dividends of democracy to the town.

“By that promise, she made us to mobilize resources by bringing bulldozer to clear the road to make it easy for her to commence work but after the election, she abandoned us but it’s now the turn of Akwukwu to abandon her by voting for another party.

“We are voting for the Labour Party candidate, Sir Victor Umeh. At least, he gave scholarship to Akwukwu people, he gave our people jobs and he’s friendly to our town.

“Please tell Uche Ekwunife that if anybody is telling her that Akwukwu is going to vote for her, the person is a 419er. She came and told us that we should not vote for candidates who have no structure but we should vote for her because she has a solid structure. But we want to make it clear to her that it is those without structure that we will deliver our votes to. Akwukwu cannot do such politics anymore.

“She should know that anybody trying to convince her to come to campaign in Akwukwu again has only one vote and cannot decide for the generality of Akwukwu people. They can’t even get up to ten votes for her not to talk of the entire community. Akwukwu is wiser now”, the statement said.

It further recalled that when the palm plantation (Mgbo) of the community was gutted by fire few years ago, Senator Uche Ekwunife took the fire incident to the floor of the Senate where she pushed for compensation for those who lost their means of livelihood adding that up till today, nothing had come out of it as the matter died there on the floor of the Senate after her presentation.

The statement demanded that “She should come out in the open to tell the town the outcome of her push for compensation in the Senate”, noting that”the town is asking to know how far she has gone with her compensation drive in the Senate.”

“We can’t be fooled anymore”, the statement concluded.
